Why replace it when you can wrap it?
Written by Glenn Machado
With production time and cash flow at an all time premium, more and more companies are looking for time and cost saving alternatives to replacing slightly damaged assets. In a refinery, just to cite an example, it is very common to encounter a leak from a hole in a carbon steel pipe. At first, this may seem like a simple repair, which would normally be fixed by cutting the old leaking section of the pipe and welding in a new section. The majority of the time though, it is not that straightforward. Chances are that the leaking pipe is located 60 feet above the ground on a pipe rack, next to another pipe through which steam flows at 300°F. Besides, having logistical issues, the leaking pipe is also responsible for supplying water or any other fluid to an important part of the plant. If this fluid supply were to be shut down, it would cost the refinery $10,000 per minute in lost production.

Select bearings with advanced features
Written by Galen Burdeshaw
Bearing selection normally begins with calculating the L10 life, which reflects the estimated life that 90 percent of a given group of bearings will achieve prior to fatigue failure. This simple estimate is based upon the actual loads and speeds applied to the bearing, as well as the bearing's dynamic capacity. However, the L10 estimate doesn't factor product quality, the product's life-extending features, maintenance, or the operating environment. Today, bearing manufacturers provide a variety of feature-rich products that are specifically designed to prolong the life, particularly in environments detrimental to bearings. As a result, it's important to consider the product design as a valuable contributor toward facility uptime and reliability.

PEM's 2009 Salary Survey: Follow the Dollars
Written by Robert Robertson and Allen Jones
Welcome to PEM's sixth annual salary survey. Once again this year, we received strong support from respondents who completed the comprehensive online questionnaire form. We continue to compare results against previous surveys. Some tables reflect multiple answers and total more than 100 percent. In other tables, categories with a low response were left out and not factored in the overall average to reinforce accuracy. PEM wants to thank the industry stakeholders who took the time to participate in this year's survey. Your help enabled us to further build out a detailed benchmark of important industry trends, which maintenance professionals, engineers and plant operations can benefit from.
