FROM THE EDITOR:
Dear Readers,
Welcome to the August PEM Plant Engineering & Maintenance e-newsletter. This month we include three very interesting features about a new lubrication breakthrough, dealing with cavitation issues, and using ultrasound technology to locate low level leaks in heat exchangers.
Conference season is almost upon us. Wherever you are in Canada, don't miss out on MainTrain, which is hitting three locations in Canada this year — Edmonton, Toronto and St. John's. There will be plenty of local content at each show. Check out the programs at www.maintrain.ca.
Regards,

Polymeric solutions for pumps suffering from cavitation
Written by Glenn Machado
Cavitation is defined as the phenomenon of formation and consequent implosion of vapor bubbles in a region where the pressure of the liquid falls below its vapor pressure. Cavitation can occur in any fluid handling equipment, especially in pumps, one of the most important components of industry today. Technological advances in industrial protective coatings and repair composite materials have made it possible to repair pumps suffering from cavitation rather than simply replacing them. Cavitation Resistant (CR) retain adhesion under long-term immersion, dissipate energy created under high intensity cavitation, and provide outstanding resistance to corrosion and other forms of erosion.

Using ultrasound technology to locate low level leaks in heat exchangers
By Alan Bandes
Ultrasonic leak detection has been used for a variety of applications ranging from energy reduction by locating compressed air leaks to quality assurance inspections such as locating wind noise and water leaks in automobiles. The secret to success is to understand the nature of what type of leak produces a detectible ultrasound and what does not, along with the techniques that can be used for effective leak identification. Once understood, there are instances where the limits of detection can be enhanced to help locate a leak in difficult situations.
