FROM THE EDITOR:

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the last PEM enewsletter for 2009. This issue includes advice on how to improve your asset management performance. Sustainability is also a big issue right now — issues such as how to improve your sustainability and how to manage your environmental footprint. According to an IFS North America study, manufacturers don't have the technology to manage the second issue. Meantime, Tompkins Associates has a new sustainability podcast series that could offer a few tips.

Happy New Year to all,

Rob Colman

Properly identify and train new employees
By Fred Matthews, CRM, CRSP
In the last issue of PEM, I spent some time talking about how worker competency was just as important to an employer's safety performance as creating a safe working environment. We identified that competency wasn't only an issue that affected young workers, but mature workers as well. We also defined a competent worker as someone who was ''adequately qualified, suitably trained and with enough experience to work with minimal or no supervision.''

Boost supply chains with communication
By Susan Rider
For many years, people thought communication silos only existed in very large corporations. These silos are rampant today, however, in companies as small as three people. Clearly, there's a lack of collaboration and an epidemic of individualism mediocrity.
