April 2008 – PEM e-News
Welcome to the April edition of the PEM e-Newsletter!
Earlier this month, PEM held a special workplace safety roundtable. Don’t miss the upcoming PEM June issue. We’ll include our summary story on the roundtable. Clearly, safety continues to be a major issue for industry.
I
attended the Industrial Accident Prevention Association’s (IAPA) recent
2008 Health and Safety Conference in Toronto. At the IAPA event, North
Safety Products held a press conference and Norm Keith, B.A., L.L.B and
CRSP with the Toronto law firm Gowlings, spoke openly about Bill C-45
and the dangers of non-compliance.
Bill C-45 made
the news again, as a Quebec company was fined $110,000 after pleading
guilty to criminal charges in a workplace death. “Bill C-45 tells the
safety community that it’s not just a bad joke–it’s real. And Bill C-45
is not to be ignored or trivialized by companies,” said Keith.
It’s
imperative that companies, managers and workers strive to create a
safer workplace. Learn more about Bill C-45 and stay safe!
Cheers,

Fowl ball at Wrigley Field
CHICAGO, IL—For
years, the Chicago Cubs have had to share their ballpark with unwanted
guests; pesky birds. It seemed Wrigley Field was an ideal spot for
birds, providing generous shelter and an abundant food source. Birds,
such as pigeons, seagulls and starlings, had been around the park for a
while, but it was complaints from the fans that prompted action to be
taken.

Maintenance crisis, eh?
Many
industry experts believe that we are in the midst of a perfect
“maintenance storm.” According to the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’

is between 50 and 55. Canada’s industry will need 400,000 new workers
within the next 10 years to replace retiring tradespersons.

In the PEM April issue:
- Skills shortage: Our
special report looks at how industry, educators and government are
succeeding in attracting students to the trades. With older workers set
to retire, more young people will be needed on the shop floor to avert
the skills shortage in the years ahead.
- Gen-X leaders: As
older workers prepare to leave the workforce, companies and maintenance
departments must prepare themselves for the transition to Generation X
(Gen-X) leaders on the shop floor. Gen-X leaders will be in charge of
job veterans and Millennial workers.
- Bearings: Check
out this great toolbox full of tips. When mounting bearings, learn why
it's important to use best practices. Ken Bannister, the industry's top
oil and lubrication expert, will also explain what NOT to do with your
bearings. It's all about extending bearing life.
- Better facilities: PEM's focus on facility management will include:
• Improve productivity with power quality.
• Sunnybrook Hospital goes WiFi wireless.
• Go mobile to improve your CMMS systems.
• American Honda saves money with CHP system.
