August 2007 – PEM e-News
Welcome to the August edition of the PEM e-Newsletter!
We’ve re-designed our PEM e-newsletters!
As Canada’s total reliability magazine, PEM continues to improve its online information services. The August e-newsletter marks the launch of a new PEM e-newsletter design and format to better meet your reading needs!
Our
goal remains to be your authoritative voice on plant operations,
engineering and maintenance. And if you haven’t done so already, you
should check out PEM’s new Web site (www.pem-mag.com).
The site includes new online features, such as PEM e-newsletters from 2007, 2006 and 2005 now archived as electronic files for your viewing, and you can source PEM archived issues from 2007, 2006 and 2005. You also can search for editorial topics from past PEM issues (i.e. type in “bearings” and hit “Go”).
We’re really excited about the new “Ask the Experts”
button feature. You can email leading industry experts and ask your
questions. Participating experts include David Berger (CMMS), Ken
Bannister (lubrication) and Paul Frisk, FLIR Systems (thermography).
Check the PEM
Web site often—as we’ll continue to add more experts (i.e. predictive
maintenance, pumps, fasteners and more) throughout the year!
Cheers,
Robert Robertson, PEM Editor PEMAC Allied Member

Top industry expert Ken Bannister leads off the special oil and
lubrication report with his article on lubrication practices. Smart
lubrication generates big results, and Ken will show you how. The
report also includes: the laws of lubrication—it starts with a good
lubrication system; avoid the high cost of micropitting by using the
right lubricant; and understanding the ABCs of viscosity.
- Health & Safety Asbestos
is a silent killer: maintainers making repairs or anyone else working
in a plant facility may encounter asbestos. It wraps around pipes and
elbows, it lines boilers and it's present in a host of ordinary
construction materials, including wallboard and ceiling tiles. This
helpful article shows maintenance professionals and other plant workers
how to properly handle asbestos.
