Ontario’s economy shifts onto new ground
A new report indicating that Ontario is shifting to a more “creative” economy and away from traditional stalwarts such as the manufacturing sector promises to be a touchstone of controversy, particularly for the beleaguered automotive sector.
“The current economic transformation is as big and as challenging as the transformation from agriculture to industry. Our economy is shifting away from jobs based largely on physical skills or repetitive tasks to ones that require analytical skills and judgment,” according to the report authored by the Roger Martin, dean of the Rotman School of Management and Richard Florida, director of the Martin Prosperity Institute.

Forum signals oil sands still offers opportunities for business
|
|
| The business development showcase at this year's National Buyers/Sellers Forum in Edmonton, AB gave attendees the opportunity to learn about new opportunities in Alberta's oil sands. |
Despite the downturn in the global economy that has sent oil prices tumbling to unexpected lows, the recent National Buyers/Sellers Forum in Edmonton, AB provided proof that opportunities for business still exist in the oil sands sector.
“The mood at the forum was very upbeat,” according to a spokesperson with Alberta’s department of Finance and Enterprise. “There is still quite a lot of activity (in the oil sands) that was evident at the forum.”
Even though there has been a long list of major oil sands projects either deferred or delayed, there is still more than $30 billion of capital investment and maintenance spending currently taking place in the sector.
For example, Bart Demosky, vice president of business services with Suncor Energy, told attendees during a presentation that Suncor is still making capital expenditures of $3 billion in the oil sands. Suncor, which is one of the major players in Alberta’s oil sands, had previously planned on expenditures of $9 billion but cut back due to the dramatic fall in oil prices and global financial instability.
With billions of dollars in major projects announced, underway, or recently completed in Alberta, there still exists many long-term opportunities for industrial suppliers, both in Alberta and across Canada.
The National Buyers/Sellers Forum is the foremost event for procurement opportunities in Alberta’s oil sands. The event, which is sponsored by the Alberta government and the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME), featured one-on-one meetings between oil sands buyers and potential suppliers; value-added seminars and a business development showcase.
Industries and sectors represented at the National Buyers/Sellers Forum included oil sands project owners; engineering, procurement, and construction firms; buyers of industrial equipment, materials, and services; industrial supply chain managers; environmental product and service suppliers; and civil infrastructure suppliers.
Amongst the suppliers represented at the forum were suppliers of structural steel; pressure vessels and tanks; heat exchangers; turbines and pumps; machine shop services; and maintenance and repair operations. This year’s event attracted 751 attendees looking for opportunities in Alberta’s oil sands including visitors from across Canada, the United States, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Germany, and Asia.
The forum’s showcase featured 107 exhibitors.
