FROM THE EDITOR:
Dear Readers,
Welcome to the first Green Business e-newsletter for October. It has been a busy couple of weeks, with details of Ontario's Green Energy Act being released and the Kerry-Boxer energy/climate bill being introduced in the Senate. Both are hopeful signs of change. Recent talks in New York leading up to the Copenhagen climate change talks this December were less hopeful. China announced that it would work at meeting ambitious goals that would lower the country's carbon use, but it wasn't quite the bold statement that everyone was hoping for — one that would change the landscape of the talks in Copenhagen. If the U.S. could get the Kerry-Boxer bill through by December, that would be big news. Few truly believe that that is possible, however.
As always, I welcome your feedback on anything you read here.
Regards,
Rob Colman

Thinking about "going green"? Proceed with caution
By Cherylyn Dickson
''Going Green'' is the latest trend in consumer marketing — the corporate advertiser's must-have accessory for the 21st century. Companies are in fierce competition to create green products and market them as such, or to highlight some previously unknown "green" aspect of an existing product. However, green advertising can degenerate into greenwashing — a term for companies that "spin" their products to be green, when in fact the product has no environmental benefits or, even worse, may have a detrimental environmental impact. If you or your company is considering jumping on the "green" bandwagon, you should take a careful look at the law surrounding this kind of advertising. more...
