FROM THE EDITOR:

Dear Readers,

There has been much to talk about in the sustainability world in the past couple of weeks. For instance, on November 6th, University of Waterloo's School of Environment Enterprise and Development was launched. Watch our video to learn more about the executive training certificates and diploma courses for industry and government the school will offer.

Canadian Business for Social Responsibility held their annual summit also. There were some useful tips about transformational leadership we caught on video (audio isn't great, but the points made are worth listening for).

In addition, climate change meetings in Copenhagen are fast approaching, and leaders insist that there will be some progress made. We talked to a few observers to get their perspective on where they thought the meetings will take us.

Lastly, CleanTech North was launched in Toronto last week. Celestica's Mike Andrade made some very interesting points about how Canadian companies working on environmentally innovative products are likely to be affected by market dynamics in the coming years.

Regards,

Time to upgrade - time to tap the power of place
By Rob Abbott
Cities are among humanity's most durable artifacts, and they are more than the sum of their buildings — they are tapestries of human lives and social networks that, at their best, tap the power of place and evoke the heart and soul of a particular geography. Too often, we have not created cities that reflect this devotion to place, community identity and nature, so we need to radically re-think how we design and build cities. more...

Copenhagen: no agreement likely, so what should we expect next?
At the conclusion of a recent round of climate change talks in Barcelona on November 6th, Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change stated, ''Governments can deliver a strong deal in Copenhagen and nothing has changed my confidence in that.'' But if it hadn't been made abundantly clear in the press beforehand, statements made by Asia-Pacific leaders this past weekend confirmed that no concrete goals will be established at next month's Copenhagen summit on climate change. So what should we expect? more...
