FROM THE EDITOR:

It's mid-summer, which is a great time to catch up on your reading. There's certainly a lot to read about in this issue of the Green Business e-newsletter, including an update on LEED Canada certifications, a new book from Harvard Business Press — Adam Werbach's Strategy for Sustainability — and a valuable Green IT Guide for smaller companies. You can read an excerpt of Werbach's book on the Green Business website.

This is also a great time to plan your autumn continuing education. Check out our plans for ENEX09 — the show is shaping up to be even better than last year.

Sustainable IT: Earth Rangers LEEDs the way
Earth Rangers is a non-profit organization that teaches hundreds of thousands of children through school and online programs about what they can do to protect the environment. For this reason, it's important to them that their headquarters have as little impact as possible, which is why they've built the Earth Rangers Centre in Woodbridge, Ontario, to a LEED Gold standard. It is now one of the most energy-efficient facilities in Canada, using 79 per cent less energy than similar buildings its size. Recently, they decided to take a step further by upgrading their IT systems with a virtualized environment. Doing so has meant saving about 90 per cent on data centre space and 90 per cent on IT energy use costs. more...

Green IT Guide: Review
As often as we talk about how much greening a company's data centre can save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, there aren't that many resources that offer a step-by-step approach to really tackling the issue. Terrabytes Consulting's new online Green IT Guide fills that gap quite successfully. more...

Schulich students give Coca-Cola Canada a passing grade – and plenty of feedback on their CRS report
Last month, Green Business told the story of how Coca-Cola Canada (Coca-Cola Ltd. (CCL) and Coca-Cola Bottling Company (CCB)), after releasing their first joint corporate responsibility and sustainability (CRS) report, gave students at The Schulich School of Business the chance to formally critique it. The students recently came back with their review and raised a number of interesting issues. more...

Strategy for Sustainability: A Business Manifesto
If you're involved in driving sustainability into your organization, you'll understand how hard it can be to get everyone to understand what sustainability really means, and then get them to commit to making it part of their business practice. This shouldn't be the case, but it is. In Adam Werbach's new book, Strategy for Sustainability: A Business Manifesto, he insists that sustainability is no longer an optional part of business – it's a question of corporate survival. How you make that a reality is the tough part, and his goal in this book is to tackle that.
