FROM THE EDITOR:

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the final Green Business enewsletter for the year. We're taking this issue to reflect on the year that was with our Top 5 Stories of the Year — the stories that we believe will have a big impact on the year to come. I also include a list of my favourite interviews of the year. The interviews include a look into Cisco's business model; how one organization is integrating sustainability planning into daily operations; and how Scotland hopes to add 2 GW of wind and wave power to their grid. If you didn't catch them the first time around, they are still very interesting reads. We also have commentary from the front lines at Copenhagen with Jonathan Cocker, a Partner at Baker & McKenzie — as well as a roundup of the top news stories from the first week and a half of the climate change summit.

A lot of what took place in 2009 is just groundwork for much bigger action that will be required in 2010. What is exciting is that there are business leaders and a few politicians that seem poised to take on that challenge.

All the best for the New Year,

Rob Colman

Developing nations unlikely to accept binding targets in Copenhagen
The first week and a half of discussions at the climate talks in Copenhagen have been marred by the entrenched positions of various countries (including Canada), perceived slights by developed nations and at least two protest walk-outs by delegates from developing nations. These same stresses are likely to make any sort of agreement in Copenhagen impossible to reach, according to Jonathan Cocker, a Toronto-based Partner with Baker & McKenzie who has been in Copenhagen during the summit. more...
