FROM THE EDITOR:

Dear Readers,
I had a very interesting conversation with a colleague the other day about how little we've been able to move the needle in the process of making companies more sustainable. This issue of the Green Business e-newsletter goes back to the basics with features on sustainability reporting and managing data. Where are you on the road to making these processes more effective and, in the end, financial savings drivers?

While I don't feel that any government has yet to embrace sustainability to the extent that they need to, there are organizations out there doing their best to encourage change — notably Zerofootprint and the Société de transport de Laval this week.

I'm always interested to hear what you consider roadblocks to change. E-mail me anytime with your comments — this conversation is an important one to expand.

Regards,

Rob Colman

Sustainability – how do you rate?
By Kathryn A. Cooper
There is a new auditor in town and he isn't looking for your Environmental Health and Safety Program or your financial statements. That auditor is your customer. Are your corporate sustainability reporting efforts hitting the mark? Which ratings or eco-logos should your company pursue to satisfy customer demands? How green is green enough? This article will help answer these questions, and act as a refresher for those in the know. more...

Applying the three Rs to information management
By Stuart Butts
The 'reduce, reuse, recycle' mantra gained a lot of currency in the 1980s. Since then a large number of organizations have been aggressively pursuing 3R policies, from paper usage and disposal practices to energy usage and water consumption. There is one additional area however, that demands equal consideration: managing data and documents.

WorldSkills Competition in Calgary an opportunity to highlight the green future of skilled trades
By Lenny Talarico
When it comes to being green, young Canadians are among the converted. To them, recycling is second-nature, a carbon footprint is a valuable measurement, global warming is a grave threat and alternative energy is the future. While Canadian schools have done a fine job in instilling an environmental consciousness into our youth, many new graduates who are surveying possible career paths may be unaware that jobs in trades and technology can put that green spirit to good use.

Why your world is about to get a whole lot smaller: oil and the end of globalization
Reviewed by Kathryn Cooper
Global market meltdowns, boom/bust cycles, spiking and falling gas prices, abnormal weather patterns — these days, it's getting harder and harder to make sense of the world. But economist Jeff Rubin's new book just might offer us something to make sense of it all — an opportunity to read our world through the lens of cheap oil.
