FROM THE EDITOR:

Dear Readers,
Welcome to this week's Green Business e-newsletter. September has been a busy month thus far, with REALpac making an exciting announcement about ambitious energy consumption targets for office buildings, Cisco expanding its Smart Grid plans, investors taking a stand on climate change, and many getting ready for the big push on global targets in Copenhagen in December. Talks are taking place today in New York in preparation for Copenhagen. Check back for updates from that event later today and tomorrow.

Some good news for a change on the climate front — carbon dioxide emissions have actually dropped internationally. This means we're making progress. It may be a small step, but it's the small steps that get us to the greater goal — a more sustainable future.

Regards,

Rob Colman

REALpac announces ambitious national target for energy consumption in office buildings
TORONTO, ON — On Friday, following extensive research and consultation, the Real Property Association of Canada (REALpac) announced the 20 by '15 national energy consumption target for office buildings. 20 by '15 is one of the most aggressive office building energy performance targets in the world and, if achieved, would make the commercial office building sector in Canada a leader in conservation efforts. Improving energy efficiency in office buildings presents a huge opportunity for addressing climate change mitigation. Concerted action promises substantial cuts in emissions while adding to economic growth, creating healthier indoor environments and renewing infrastructure. more...

Don't believe government action makes a difference on climate change? Think again
According to a report in the Financial Times yesterday, an International Energy Agency (IEA) report has found that worldwide carbon-dioxide emissions have undergone a "significant decline" this year, shrinking 2.6 per cent. This is said to be the steepest CO2 drop in the last four decades. And according to the IEA, one-quarter of the CO2 drop was actually a result of government policies, particularly those championed in the EU, US and China. more...
