Dear Readers,

Welcome to the December edition of the Green Business e-newsletter.

We are living in interesting times, to say the least. Markets have been struggling, and the “R” word has crept into most discussions of the economy.

And yet, there are some bright lights and positive signals that suggest even in turbulent times, investments in infrastructure, clean technology and education will help us weather this storm and create more vibrant and forward thinking economies in the process. Consider some of the news in this e-newsletter – increased investment in solar energy education, higher enrolments in nuclear engineering programs, an address from U.S. President-Elect Barack Obama firmly stating that he will invest in energy efficiency programs.

There have been other pieces of good news over the past few months. It’s interesting to note that in the last print edition of Green Business, the news section included an announcement of an expansion at a wind turbine factory in Fort Erie. This month, Enermodal Engineering, specialists in green building, announced the opening of a new office in Toronto. Undeniably, our markets are in flux, but there are thriving businesses that will help us get beyond tough economic times. Given the right support, it may be that that change occurs more quickly.

As always, I welcome any comments you have on what you read here. I encourage you to e-mail me at rcolman@clbmedia.ca.

All the best for the holiday season,,

Obama's infrastructure plans
When Barack Obama was first elected president in November, everyone expected him to make a few statements within the ensuing weeks to let the U.S. populace know that he is a man of action and would deliver the change he had promised. He has done that by unveiling aspects of his ambitious infrastructure program. He did so online in early December. Two of the goals of this infrastructure plan include reducing the country's dependence on oil, and saving billions of dollars.
