Small- and medium-sized businesses the focus of PTC software conference

NEEDHAM, MA — PTC, makers of Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire mechanical CAD software, invited the world's press recently to show how its products can help small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs).

The product development (PD) process is ''fully digital'' now, presenter Steve Eppinger, professor at the Sloan School of Management, MIT, told the press conference. He indicated PD strategies are also global, where the baseline is survival, but that growth can be accomplished through lean methods such as using global engineering deployment.

Skilled workforces around the world and internet connnectivity allows firms to ''rent or buy'' expertise as needed, Eppinger said. ''Distributed product development enables 24/7 engineering and faster results. These strategies are equally relevant to large and small firms.''

The press conference gave PTC (ptc.com) software customers a chance to show off their designs. Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire mechanical CAD user Yoichiro Dan, a mechanical engineer at ZMP in Japan (zmp.co.jp) demonstrated the miuro robot audio system built with Kenwood audio technology (click image above for Windows Media Video courtesy of Ralph Grabowski).

Another customer demonstrated how PTC's Mathcad software and Pro/ENGINEER help to design high frequency antennas. Greg O'Neill, senior RF engineer at SkyCross, Inc., (skycross.com) said that he can write antenna masks that simulate the characteristics of wave patterns directly into Mathcad. ''It provides confidence in designing RF circuits. Predictive performance is what we're accomplishing.''
