Editor's Note
Cargo: the final frontier
Ask
the average person what concerns them most about air travel security
and they'll likely point to scandalous reports showing that airport
screeners have missed a person or piece of luggage with an offending
item.
Network Defence
Q&A
Are there holes in your network defence strategy?
What will you do if your network is hacked?
With the potential for harm to your brand, it's no wonder businesses are worried about their data.
From
hackers to spam to viruses to DoS attacks, your network or website is
constantly under attack. We want to hear about your concerns and help
provide some answers.
Send your burning questions to jbrown@clbmedia.ca and we'll forward them on to DigitalDefence who will answer them in the pages of Canadian Security magazine.
Please
send as much information as possible to allow DigitalDefence to analyze
your question and come up with a detailed answer. The answer will be
e-mailed to you directly and later be published in Canadian Security so others may benefit from your experience. Your company name will not be published.
We ask that your questions be limited to the field of network security, but other than that, anything's game.
Remember: There are no stupid questions, only safer networks.
The best three questions will receive an ipod!
2008 Security Director of the Year
Security directors and managers are often the unsung heroes in both the
private and public sector in Canada. With responsibility for an
ever-growing list of people and assets, the job of managing a security
department is becoming one that demands not only a background in
security, but also vital people skills as well as significant business
and technological savvy.
Canadian Security
Magazine is now accepting nominations for it's third annual Security
Director of the Year award, sponsored by Anixter Canada. We want to
find the individual who best exemplifies leadership and vision in the
world of corporate security.
Do you work with someone
who motivates and mentors his or her staff and provides inspiration on
the job? Or do you know a colleague who has completed a unique
initiative that has produced benefit not only to the security
department but the entire company? Let us know. We are asking for
specific criteria that will aid the judges in determining the winner.
Please submit your nominations here. The deadline is May 30.

Secure Report Cards: The
Toronto Catholic District School Board created its own internal report
card application that teachers could access online, but the challenge
was getting them to use it securely.
The application had
to be secured internally, and then exposed externally – that's when the
school board decided to go through a process of evaluation for an SSL
virtual private network (VPN). From a security standpoint, it allows
them to use public transport as an access method, but with several
layers of technology to provide security.
