Distilling a new age of security
How workplace violence regulations helped fast-track security upgrades at the NSLC

Bill Cowper is always up for a challenge. But overhauling security for a province-wide body responsible for the distribution and control of alcohol has been a project that has put his 30-plus years of experience in law enforcement to the test — often drawing on skills that have more to do with re-engineering business. But in this day and age, when security ideally works hand-in-hand with other business units, it's how things get done right.

Tri-Laterial Security Conference looks at 21st century terrorism
ASIS involved in organization of Calgary event

Three of Calgary's professional security organizations are working together for the third year in a row, to address the growing need for information about the convergence of technology and physical security. The aim? To help security and law enforcement professionals achieve a holistic approach to addressing gaps vulnerable to terrorism, privacy and security risks.

Finding common ground with police leaders

In late January, the Private Sector Liaison Committee (PSLC) of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) held a conference under the banner Building Private Security and Public Policing Partnerships.

Delegates got to hear three truly remarkable things. First (and sadly), they heard representatives of police unions (once again) demonstrate their proclivity for having their heads in the sand by (once again) characterizing private security as ''the competition'' for the police. Second, though — and this was truly significant — delegates heard influential police executives stand up and say (sincerely) ''The debate over whether or not to partner with private security is over. The question now is how to partner with private security.'' Third — and intriguingly — we heard members of the PSLC say that the main issue which prompted them to organize the conference was their frustration with the lack of inter-provincial harmonization of private security regulations.

2008 Security Director of the Year

Security directors and managers are often the unsung heroes in both the private and public sector in Canada. With responsibility for an ever-growing list of people and assets, the job of managing a security department is becoming one that demands not only a background in security, but also vital people skills as well as significant business and technological savvy.

Canadian Security Magazine is now accepting nominations for it's third annual Security Director of the Year award, sponsored by Anixter Canada. We want to find the individual who best exemplifies leadership and vision in the world of corporate security.

Do you work with someone who motivates and mentors his or her staff and provides inspiration on the job? Or do you know a colleague who has completed a unique initiative that has produced benefit not only to the security department but the entire company? Let us know. We are asking for specific criteria that will aid the judges in determining the winner. Please submit your nominations here. The deadline is May 30.
