TOOLS OF THE TRADE

Breathing coveralls
North-Gen coveralls are the only ones with ventilated gussets, according to its maker North Safety. This design innovation is important because non-porous coveralls can be very uncomfortable in warm conditions. North-Gen comes in three models: North-Gen Air, which is made from a white, revolutionary, soft polyethylene, bonded to a non-woven polypropylene that offers superior resistance to dust and minor chemical splashes; North-Gen Pro is made from a blue, non-woven breathable, multilayer polypropylene, also for dust and chemicals; North-Gen FR is made from a green, non-woven, breathable multilayer polypropylene with a flame retardant treatment for arc flash risks and fire fighting.

Gas detection in colour
RECON/4 is Enmet Corporation's new compact portable gas detector with colour LCD. RECON/4 features a belt-clip style and weighs about 200 grams. It can monitor for CO, H2S, O2 and combustible gas simultaneously, says the company. The instrument features STEL, TWA and two instant alarms with audio/visual and vibratory indicators, rechargeable battery and one-button operation for simple use. Enmet says RECON/4 is designed to be intrinsically safe.

Face mask with surround sound
Draeger's new PSS 7000 self-contained breathing apparatus includes a fully integrated electronic monitoring system, called Sentinel 7000, and a comfort sealing face mask, called FPS 7000, designed for surround sound communication. Sentinel 7000 includes a PASS device that provides both audible and visual alarms to the user, the company says. It displays and records all vital information from the PASS device and from the self-contained breathing apparatus, providing real-time information on air supply and consumption, Draeger says. The new communication system fits into the FPS 7000 mask and has a fully integrated voice amplifier/radio interface system. The communication system includes Draeger's new titanium sound technology (TTS), which has a resistance to high temperature environments. TTS is incorporated into the Draeger PASS alarm sounders providing a loud 95 dba plus warning output to alert other firefighters in the area.

Safety from every angle
Pyramex Safety's newest safety eyeglass, Onix, features a newly designed adjustable nosepiece that provides three different angles, allowing the user to find the most comfortable fit, the company says. It features suspended lenses that provide a stylish look, comfort fit, panoramic view and maximum protection. The Onix safety eyeglass also features ratcheting temples that align at different angles for a perfect view in all applications. Its cushioned temple tips provide non-slip comfort and lenses filter 99 per cent of harmful UV rays, according to the company. Pyramex says Onix meets CAN/CSA Z94.3-02 standard.
