Key Semiconductor Market Data
FSA, the voice
of the global fabless business model, announces the availability of
updated trend and statistical data within its Semiconductor Market Report.
The
Report, a collaborative effort between FSA and IC Insights, provides
comprehensive market trend information for companies in the outsourced
supply chain. It offers data, statistics and business intelligence to
conceptualize business strategies and formulate recommendations.
Updated report sections include: Leading Integrated Circuit (IC)
Suppliers, Global IC Outlook and Cycles and Foundry.
The
Leading IC Suppliers section features final semiconductor company sales
rankings for 2006, including the top 50 semiconductor, IC, and fabless
IC supplier rankings, as well as 2006 rankings of suppliers within
various IC product market segments.
The Global IC
Outlook and Cycles section focuses on the growth rates of the
semiconductor market and the electronic system industry. From 1978 to
2006, the semiconductor market grew annually at almost twice the rate
of the electronic system industry, at 12.7 percent compound annual
growth rate (CAGR) compared to 6.9 percent CAGR for electronic systems.
IC Insights forecasts the annual electronic system sales growth will be
slightly below its historical average at 6.6 percent, while the average
annual semiconductor market growth will slow but still register a
healthy 8.4 percent CAGR from 2006 to 2011.
“More IC
product areas are being dominated by a few companies, and making
profits in an IC segment where the company is not one of the top three
to four companies is challenging,” said Bill McClean, president of IC
Insights. “The trend over the past five years indicates that the IC
industry is maturing and will lead to a more profitable future for the
market leaders and a continued struggle for lower-ranked companies.”
The
Foundry section compares pure-play and integrated device manufacturer
(IDM) foundry markets, as well as forecasts the potential growth over
the next four years. From 2006 to 2011, pure-play foundry sales are
expected to display a 15 percent CAGR, almost double the eight percent
total IC industry CAGR expected during the same time frame. The IDM
foundry business is forecast to grow just over US$6.0 billion in 2011,
a 2006 to 2011 CAGR of 12 percent. Pure-play foundries are forecast to
represent 85 percent of total foundry sales in 2007. For more information, visit www.fsa.org/store. And for the latest in semiconductors and ICs, don’t miss the November issue of Canadian Electronics magazine.

FEATURE PRODUCT
OSCILLOSCOPE-BASED DDR3 COMPLIANCE SOFTWARE
Agilent
Technologies Inc. has announced the industry’s first oscilloscope-based
DDR3 compliance test application. The U7231A DDR3 test application,
which runs on Infiniium 54850 and 80000 series oscilloscopes, provides
DDR3 compliance measurements based on the Joint Electronic Device
Engineering Council (JEDEC) JESD79-3 DDR3 SDRAM specifications. It
covers clock, electrical and timing parameters. This application also
features advanced debug mode, which provides critical measurements such
as eye-diagram analysis, mask tests, ringing measurements and other
tests that are not covered in the JEDEC specifications.

| WEB WATCH
Power Supplies: Using the System Builder www.acopianpowersupplies.com/powersys.aspx
at Acopian Power Supplies’ Web site, www.acopian.com, engineers can
design their own multiple-output power systems, redundant systems and
customized power supplies by simply specifying output voltages and
currents and any special features that are required. Any size
restriction can also be entered. The company will then use its
production expertise to ensure that the power supply will be assembled,
tested, and shipped within nine days after receipt of the order.
Infrared Thermography: FLIR Systems, a leader in infrared cameras, has launched a Web site, www.infraredresearchcameras.com.
The site is tailored to scientists and engineers working in research
and development applications and meant to serve as a resource center
for technical applications involving infrared thermography. The site
includes a complete Download Center, located within each product
section, with detailed images, white papers, data sheets and technical
background that will serve as a convenient reference library for the
industry.
Society of Manufacturing Engineers: The Society of
Manufacturing Engineers (SME) announces the launch of society-related
news in Really Simple Syndication (RSS) on its Web site. RSS is a
labour-saving tool which allows Web users to tune into information
sources that interest them and makes it possible for them to keep up
with their favourite Web sites in an automated manner that is easier
than checking them manually. Utilizing any RSS reader, users can now
subscribe to the SME News Feed which will provide them with the latest
up-to-the-minute SME news. http://feeds.feedburner.com/sme
Power Solutions: Staco Energy Products Co. introduces its Web site at www.stacoenergy.com
which gives viewers multiple ways to search for solutions to common
power problems like power outages, overheated transformers, flickering
lights, power factor penalties, voltage fluctuations, high utility
bills, and nuisance tripping breakers. To address these issues, Staco

PolyZen™ Micro-Assembly Protects DC Power Ports
The
PolyZen™ micro-assembly protects sensitive electronics from damage
caused by inductive voltage spikes, voltage transients, incorrect power
supplies and reverse bias. The device combines a stable zener diode
with a PPTC layer that responds to diode heating or overcurrent,
protecting both zener and follow-on electronics, effectively increasing
the diode's power handling capacity.
