The Land Mobile Radio Market
The North American Land Mobile Radio (LMR) market is expected to
reach US$7.5 billion by 2010, according to a study recently published
by VDC. This considerable growth is driven by recent U.S. Government
communications grants to public safety organizations to help modernize
their equipment so they will have interoperable solutions.
There are several Canadian companies involved with LMR, including
Lyrtech Inc. of Quebec City, a leader in digital signal processing
(DSP) technologies. The company recently announced that its
collaboration with Texas Instruments has resulted in the new Small Form
Factor (SFF) Software-defined Radio (SDR) Evaluation Module, the SFF
SDR Development Platform, and the SFF SCA Development Platform.
Lyrtech launched the SFF SDR development platforms at the 2006
edition of the SDR Forum technical conference, an event that provides
an international perspective on the current state of development of
software-defined radio.
Designed around the TMS320DM6446 system-on-chip (SoC) from Texas
Instruments and Virtex-4 SX35 FPGA from Xilinx, the SFF SDR development
platforms address the needs for highly portable SDR of the military,
public safety, and commercial markets. The platforms are designed for
low-power, compact, portable applications that closely resemble the
architecture of portable radios and nano/femto base stations.
VDC expects that public safety/military radio product category will
have a CAGR of 11.3% during the 2005-2010 forecast period of this
report. U.S. Government grants are the primary driver for this
double-digit growth.
