Flat Panel Display Revenues Expected to Rise

More evidence that the consumer market continues to lead in electronics: DisplaySearch, a display market research and consulting firm, says that flat panel display (FPD) revenues for all applications, ranging from <1" to >70", are expected to rise 13 percent in 2006 to US$84B. On a unit basis, FPDs are expected to rise 12 percent to 3.6B panels which will deliver 42.8M square meters of viewable area, enough to cover 5,711 soccer fields. Driving the growth is the exploding flat panel TV market with revenues for TV panels and imagers expected to rise 60 percent to $29.6B.

The TV market is expected to account for 35 percent of all flat panel revenues in 2006, up from 25 percent in 2005 and 16 percent in 2004. While flat panel TVs are expected to account for just 29 percent of TV units in 2006, they are expected to account for 82 percent of TV display module revenues, up from 67 percent in 2005, and 48 percent of TV display module area, up from 27 percent in 2005.

Within flat panel TV revenues, LCD TV panels are expected to rise from a 66 percent share in 2005 to a 71 percent share in 2006 on 73 percent growth to $21.1B with plasma TV panels falling from 31 percent to a 27 percent share despite 39 percent growth in 2006 to $7.9B. Microdisplay imagers are expected to remain flat at $610M.
