Surface Mount Technology
Surface mount technology (SMT) equipment is divided between
high-volume, low-mix and low-volume, high-mix production. The demand
for benchtop equipment that serves the production requirements of the
latter has been on a steady rise. The ability to provide high
flexibility and the required degree of performance at a fraction of the
floor space and at affordable prices has resulted in increased demand.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (www.electronics.frost.com),
World SMT Benchtop Equipment Markets, reveals that revenues in this
industry totaled US$152.4 million in 2005 and expects to reach $363.7
million in 2012.
“Being an intensely competitive and fast-paced industry, electronics
relies on constant innovation and improvement of its products to
sustain interest among customers,” says Research Analyst Deepa Mathew.
“SMT benchtop equipment plays a crucial role by providing a high
degree of flexibility and desired performance to suit low-volume,
high-mix production requirements.”
For OEMs and contract manufacturers who intend to adhere to RoHS
regulations, the new SMT equipment announcements in the November issue
of Canadian Electronics magazine will be of particular interest.

Electrical Measurement Safety: Fluke Electronics
Canada announces its Electrical Measurement Safety interactive video
aimed at reducing hazards for people measuring electrical circuits, and
helping reduce risk and liability for employers. This 25-minute video
dramatizes the hazards of electrical measurement and explains the
precautions that help defend against the arc flash. Available through
the Fluke Web site http://www.flukecanada.ca/safety.
LEDs and Lasers: September 25 Webcast by Matthew Brennesholtz, Sr. Analyst for Insight Media (www.insightmedia.info)
and co-author of the text "Projection Displays," discusses the
technology of red, green and blue solid-state light sources suitable
for direct view LCD and projection applications. The design of HDTV
displays using these solid-state light sources will also be covered.
Finally, forecasts for LED and laser display sales through 2010 will be
discussed.
Panel Design: NKK Switches offers the Legend Maker,
an online tool created specifically to aid design engineers in panel
design. The Legend Maker is a simple online CAD tool that takes
engineers step-by-step through the creation and specification process
and allows engineers the convenience of immediately proofing their
legends. The Legend Maker is available at www.nkkswitches.com/legendmaker.
