1. EDITOR'S NOTE:
Auto bailout necessary evil
No
one likes to give money away and some believe that's exactly what
governments are doing in loaning money to the Canadian auto industry.
The
federal and Ontario governments announced on Dec. 21 they'll provide $4
billion in loans to General Motors and Chrysler. Ottawa is contributing
$2.7 billion and Queen's Park will kick in $1.3 billion. The aid
package represents about 20 per cent of a similar loan program
announced in Washington for the two American automakers.
While
the bailout comes in the form of loans that are to be repaid, it seemed
initially that public opinion was against any help for the auto
industry, but a recent national poll suggests otherwise. A Canadian
Press Harris-Decima survey found 56 per cent of Canadians supported the
notion of "proportional, repayable loans," while 33 per cent were
opposed. Predictably the number in favour of the loans rose in Ontario,
with 62 per cent in favour of the bailout.
People
have come around to the fact that to let the auto industry fail, would
be too big a hit for our economy to take, especially in this current
climate of crisis. And remember, these are loans. If the companies fail
to change their ways – and there is ample evidence that they were on
their way to turning things around before the collapse of the economy
last fall – they may still go out of business. Another fact to keep in
mind is that while car sales are down and may never reach the heights
of earlier this decade, there are still a lot of older models out there
and people will continue to buy cars and that number will certainly
grow over the next few years. The only question is will they buy GMs,
Fords and Chryslers?

Survive the credit crunch by instilling discipline throughout your business
The
credit crunch is rapidly making its way from Wall Street and Bay Street
to Main Street, Canada and is squeezing privately held businesses
across a wide swath of industries. Slowing growth, weakening demand and
reduced lending by banks compound an already difficult environment.
While some regions of the country and certain industries are proving
more resilient than others, our general advice to owners of privately
held businesses is to take proactive steps to prepare for challenging
days ahead, particularly with respect to businesses that rely on the US
market or are exposed to highly volatile commodities.
