1. EDITOR'S NOTE:
Sowing the seeds for growth
Given
the turbulent economic times Canadian manufacturers have been enduring
recently, a discussion about the prospects and strategies for growth
might seem a little out of place. But for companies focused on the long
term and not what's going to happen in the next 24 or 48 hours, the
undeniable fact is that there is still considerable growth taking place
in the world's emerging economies; Canadian manufacturers that are
positioned to take advantage of that growth are the ones that will not
only survive, but thrive in the coming years.
Our
second annual Advanced Manufacturing/KPMG Executive Roundtable gathered
a diverse group of successful manufacturing executives to discuss how
their companies are looking beyond immediate challenges, developing
long-term strategic goals for growth and, competing and winning in
global emerging markets.
During the spirited
conversation, the assembled executives touched on a variety of topics
related to growth, including: improving value-added activities,
investment in R&D and technology, global supply chains, finance and
taxation, and competition.

Risks and rewards of purchasing network equipment on the secondary market
By Mark Tauschek
Purchasing
networking equipment on the rapidly growing secondary market can prove
to be a financial boon to many manufacturers. The cost of used network
gear can be 50-90 per cent less expensive than in the primary vendor
and channel market. However, buyers must understand the potential risks
and know how to avoid them. Most enterprises will find some
circumstances where buying refurbished network equipment on the
secondary market makes a lot of sense. Know when the opportunity
exists, and understand the market before committing to a buying
decision.

8. EXPERT COLUMNS: Lean Insights
Implementing Lean projects is about much more than just Lean tools
By Dr. Timothy Hill
The
use of lean tools has been with us for over a century. Early authors
who described Toyota such as Jefffrey Liker, James P. Womack, Dan
Jones, others and myself have mentioned that the Toyota “tools” go back
to the late 1800s. We know about tools — our bookshelves are full with
examples of Lean turnarounds and brilliant companies that did better.
However, the success stories have a hidden threat — they talk about
Lean tools but don’t tell you why Lean won’t work in your business.
