1. EDITOR'S NOTE:

Manufacturing should recieve more attention from politicians

With the federal election upon us, the economy has recently become THE issue. According to a plan put forth by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, entitled "An Action Plan for a Competitive Canada", we need a economic strategy that can meet the challenges of a highly competitive volatile global marketplace, that has hurt many sectors in the manufacturing industry.

The chamber's political priorities include:

  • Competitive taxes, a lower national debt and effective government spending.
  • Improving Canada-US relations through better border infrastructure, regulatory co-operation and easier travel.
  • Agreements to dismantle barriers to international trade and investment, and eliminate interprovincial trade barriers.
  • A market-based approach to energy, with technology-neutral efficiency standards and a balanced and effective framework to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

It's clear something needs to be done. Whether you agree with this plan or have other ideas, this country needs a comprehensive strategy to deal with the problems our manufacturers are facing.

Strategic Service Management: Part of any cost-reduction program
By Doug Guess

As Chief Financial Officer, it's my job to ensure that the company does more with less in order to deliver increasing value to our shareholders. It appears that ''doing more with less'' is a common refrain among companies across the globe in the current economic climate of increasing costs and slowing top-line growth. Many of these global companies — whether they are high-tech, aerospace and defense or motor vehicles — are struggling to deliver increasing value to shareholders as pressure on profits.
